Call for Makers 2016!

Calling all Makers for the third annual Poughkeepsie Mini Maker Faire, taking place on Saturday, November 12, from 10am to 4pm, at Poughkeepsie Day School!

We’re looking for established and emerging “makers” from the mid-Hudson Valley and beyond for this family-friendly celebration featuring rockets and robots, DIYscience and technology, urban farming and sustainability, alternative energy, bicycles, unique hand-made crafts, music and local food, and educational workshops and installations. The more interactive and hands-on, the better! Click here  to see a list of the kinds of projects that we are looking for.

Space is limited – any groups or individuals interested in participating in this amazing event should complete the simple application here.

2015 Maker Faire Program and Map

Name: Visual artist Nestor Madalengoitia will create a foam sculpture of a Poughkeepsie Activist and Peacemaker (Special Attraction)

Description:  Born in Lima, Peru, Nestor Madalengoitia is a portrait and mural artist. He was educated at the Catholic University of Lima-Peru, and SUNY New Paltz NY. Nestor’s work is inspired by the work of the pre-Columbian Peruvian Paracas tapestry with a modern understanding, which defines his own visual and conceptual vocabulary. He currently lives and works in Poughkeepsie, NY, where he is creating portraits of Poughkeepsie citizens.

Name: Repurpose It! Facial Expression Art

Description: Li Pipman Denaut, an original do-it-yourselfer who has a flair for repurposing, invites you to see found objects in a new way. Create facial expressions art – from funny, goofy, spooky, surprised, funky, abstract and silly – using repurposed objects and treasures. Explore the shapes, color and texture of the materials to create a one-of-a-kind face that represents the artist in us all!

Description: View the microscopic world of parasites! This ‘Look and Find’ parasite exhibit is presented by Michael Tibbetts of Bard College’s science department. Use microscopes to view prepared slides of specific parasites that co-exist in the bodies of animals. How many different types of organisms can you discover.

Name: Practical 3D Printing

Description:  Makers who need unique parts for their projects can get them directly from a 3D printer. Wrenches, appliquè iron holders, circuit enclosures, camera mounts, pen adapters and refilling stations, bottle holders, fender brackets, chain mail, hood props, knife handles…if you can imagine an object, you can now make one! Watch engineer Ed Nisely produce interesting parts and get a feel for the future of personal making.

NameMoving and Making: Human Connectoids

Description: Use Makey Makey devices to connect conductive materials to recorded musical effects. Explore ways of making music by moving into spaces and places, touching objects, and connecting with other human beings. Human Connectoids is presented by Dorothy Luongo, grade 5 teacher at PDS.

: Vassar College’s very own circus troupe specializes in juggling, balancing, and spinning poi, staff and other props! They even spin and juggle fire (and yes, the fire is real).

Name:  Soldering with Squidwrench

Description: Sqidwrench will teach kids how to solder solar cockroaches. Soldering is one of the most fundamental skills needed to dabble in the world of electronics. Open up a whole new world in building, altering and fixing with soldering skills taught by Teresa Maranzano.

Name: Native American Hoop Dance

Description: Attendees learn steps to the Native American hoop dance! In the workshop attendees learn basic steps and transformations and then combined them to tell a story.

Name: Llama Land

Description: These llamas and alpacas are visiting from Clover Brook Farm, otherwise known as Llama Karma. Andrea Parent-Tibbetts will show you how to pet an alpaca, walk a llama and can teach you about soap felting, wool and fiber. Children of all ages are invited to enjoy the interactive experience of getting up close and personal with these animals during the Llama Glama photo booth and Llama/Alpaca Parade.

Description: PDS Middle School teacher Karl Mauks presents Krafts 4 Kids for young makers. Krafts 4 Kids provides a variety of fun materials and instructors to help little hands create. Learn how to make pipe-cleaner bracelets, pipe-cleaner pumpkins, crepe flowers, Popsicle stick animals and more!

Name: The Power of Brainwaves

Description: PDS student Leif Williams Grinnell ’18 invites you to try on a brainwave reading headset and watch motors move with your brain wave activity. Try on the brainwave monitor and see how your thoughts can control motors!

Name: The Church of Nature –  Connecting you more deeply to yourself and to Nature. 

Description: Labyrinth – The Church of Nature will hand draw a labyrinth for everyone to walk. Walking a labyrinth is an ancient tool used to connect to the earth and offer a time and space to reflect. Along the labyrinth path find words of reflection and encouragement.  Add your own along the way. Stop and reflect as you walk the path. The labyrinth will be open from 10AM through the close of the Faire. 

The Constellation Project – The Church of Nature will lead a discussion on why we create stories in the night skies. Then answer the question ‘If I were a constellation I would be…’ Using black construction paper and a total of 15 silver dots, map out your own constellation. We will pin them all up to create a constellation map of the Maker Faire community. Participants will receive a photo of the finished project.

Flower Power: The Seed Ball Project – Come get your hands dirty and make seed balls with us. Seed balls are the ultimate in surprise gardening. The clay and dirt protect the seeds, letting you thoughtfully launch them in places where a little brightness is needed.  As we are nearing winter, we suggest saving your Seed Balls until spring in cool dry place. Seeds are Native Northeast Wild Flowers both annual and perennial. Great for seeding areas that are hard to reach in your own yard, or for throwing into abandoned lots.  These seeds are neonic free making them a safe source of food for our pollinator friends.

Name: Microbial Fuel Cells

Description: Learn how to harness the power of bacteria growing in common soil to power LEDs, a digital clock, even a thermometer! Help microbiologist Brooke Jude, Assistant Professor of Biology and Director of the Citizen Science Program at Bard College, use some common (and recycled!) materials to build a sustainable microbial fuel cell battery.

Description: Boasting one of the simplest Tesla coil driving circuits ever, Matthew Storer of Teslatronix makes wireless electricity experimentation simple, easy, and cheap for everyone. Our Tesla coils use lower DC input voltages and a basic circuit design to accomplish wireless power transfer demonstrations. Our Tesla coils are perfect for the classroom and the electrical hobbyist.

Name: Nature Necklace with Evan Miklos of Creek Scouts

Description: Design your own nature necklace using natural materials. Participants will choose an animal or plant that they have a connection to and create a design based on it. Using Sharpie they will draw it on a wood slice and then drill a hole in the wood and put it on a piece of string.

Description: Come and make a collaborative zine with us! Zines are “do-it-yourself” publications that can be created by makers of all ages. Create a page about why you love the Mini Maker Faire and what being a “maker” means to you. At our booth, you’ll find paper, pens, pencils, crayons—everything you’ll need to make your page! After we collect all the pages makers contribute, we’ll bind them into a zine at the Vassar College Library. If you don’t have time to create with us pick up our “Make your own zine” kit to take home! Receive a mini zine about the Vassar Zines Library, as well as information on how to donate your zines to our collection.

Name: Transform old Cardboard into Cat-Scratching Boxes

Description: This workshop with Stephanie Shum will teach about the various ways to reuse cardboard. Participants can help make cat-scratching boxes from old cardboard, which will then be donated to pet shelters.

Name: Welcome to Kappa’s Underwater World

Description: Artist Leslie Pelino of Howling Spiders Studio in New Paltz, New York, has created an enchanted space with Kappa, the interactive sea monster. Kids and adults are invited to visit Kappa in his whimsical environment surrounded by giant colorful sculptures created from recycled materials. Move Kappa’s swimmy noodle arms and take “selfies” with this mythical Japanese creature. Kappa’s visitors will be part of a Go Pro video art piece.

Description:  Ray Rumore will present several projects he has been working on during the past year. Each one addresses one or more areas of robotics – locomotion, vision, AI, etc. I hope you enjoy interacting with them.

Name: A Skull with Animated Eyes

Description: This student led project by Liam Held is inspired by a concept by David Boccabella (Marcwolf) on the Stan Winston School of Character Arts forums. This project is a human skull with animated eyes on OLED screens. The pupils react to light, just like a live human. Watch out, it may speak to you!

Name: Newtonian Telescope and Dobsonian Mount

Description: This homemade Newtonian Telescope and Dobsonian mount was built by Jack Chastain, member of the Mid-Hudson Astronomical Association. Learn about the building of the telescope, the construction of the Dobsonian mount and practicing astronomy as an amateur.

Description: PDS grade 9 student, Zachary Wolin, built, wired and wrote the program that enables this two-legged robot to walk.

Name: Makey Unplugged

Description: Inspired by Jay Silver’s and Eric Rosenbaum’s Makey Makey, Georjawin Madathiparambil’s invention kit helps others to bring out their inner “maker.” The kit can help makers from the fields of art, design and technology to create interesting projects by connecting their ideas to the digital world without having to learn programming. His goal is to inspire others to have a “maker mindset” and to demystify the belief that technical know-how is a requirement of utilizing the potential of digital media.

Name: Mining for Gold

Description: Hudson Valley FIRST LEGO League presents a look into the types of problems kids can solve if we give them the tools and a fun way to work. How can machines “think” about what is around them, and react to those things? The FIRST LEGO league and JR. FIRST LEGO League programs are designed to stimulate this growth, but today we will look outside of the program at things we could achieve using the same tools. Younger children are invited to investigate the world of FIRST LEGO League.

Name: Re-inventing Classic Photography

Description: Joseph Apuzzo of Squidwrench demonstrates “lens bokeh,” which is the art of having only certain objects in focus while others are blurred. This effect matches how we see the world around us. The effect is created by adapting 35mm vintage lenses to modern digital SLR bodies. The result is a fully (maniacal) manual lens with a digital sensor that replaces the 35mm film. You can explore classic methods and tricks that automatic digital camera cannot produce easily nor affordably.

Name: Painting as a Meditation for Minis!

Description: Inspired by the Stillpoint paintings of artist John Diamond, M.D. children will learn how to use painting as a meditation – something they can then share with the whole family! Dr. Diamond is a pioneer in holistic health, and begun painting as part of his daily meditation. Due to the enthusiastic reactions of those who saw them, Dr. Diamond’s paintings have now been exhibited worldwide. Children will learn to paint through spontaneous expression, imagination and play, and further have the opportunity to handle some of Dr. Diamond’s paintings.

Description: PDS students have built a small set of virtual challenges using the LEAP paired with Unity 5 in a sandbox scenario. The challenges include stacking blocks, throwing them threw hoops and other simple tasks in a virtual reality displayed a computer screen.

Name: Facial Recognition Lock Box

Description: PDS students have made a facial recognition safe that will only open for the person it recognizes. We used a raspberry pi for a computer, and the language we used was Python through OpenCV.

Name: TIMS: Thermal Imaging Missile System

Description: PDS student, Nachman Kaul-Seidman (grade 8), will exhibit a Thermal Imaging Missile System (TIMS), a Raspberry Pi-based robot that uses an infrared scanner to locate, lock-on to and devastate warm-bodied targets with [tiny, Lego] missiles.

Name: Papermaking from Recycled Paper

Description: Projects include ornaments, seed paper, paper casting, paper molding, paper for bookmaking, cards and sculpture. Office paper and other papers are recycled, strained and made into beautiful sheets of handmade paper. Participants can help Anita Fina Kiewra process and dip sheets of paper, remove the water and take a damp sheet of paper home with them.

Description: Hudson Valley Improv will do a 15 minute improv class for people ages 10 and up. HVI is home to Alter EgoZ improve troupe and is your source for professional level improvisational classes, directing and shows.

Description: Dance vibes and music provided by Matthias Johnson of DJO Technology. Learn DJing with his setup of open source DJ software and lights controlled using the Open Lighting Architecture. The Open Light Project, specifically the Open Lighting Architecture (OLA), allows a computer using the open source OLA software to control lights via a USB to DMX cable or network cable. Additional software can be layered on top of this architecture to assist with triggering light sequences and scenes. Warning blinking lights.

BREAK it & MAKE it @ the Library

Use a hammer and screwdriver to break open an old laptop, a keyboard or a mouse and discover what is inside! Then re-purpose any pieces and design your own tech – inspired creation.

Name: In Our Family: Portraits of All Kinds of Families

Description: In Our Family, a favorite exhibit of primary and secondary schools, explores the diversity of non-traditional family structure through conveying the experiences of non-traditional families in their own words. In Our Family promotes tolerance by encouraging discussion of who constitutes a family, and champions the understanding and acceptance of difference, a crucial aspect of anti-bullying work, by opening up a dialogue around the meaning of family.

Name: Fauna, Flora and Field Guides

Description: Learn about Poughkeepsie Day School Environmental Club’s   involvement with the Trout in the Classroom program to raise awareness about the current status of trout conservation in the Northeast and the health of our local waters- all while learning about the life stages of our live trout! In addition to the trout, the club will have a live aquarium with organisms from a local lake ecosystem to interact with. Please help decorate these aquaria through various arts and crafts projects! They will also be presenting information on invasive species including our group’s current research investigations into a new aquatic invasive species of shrimp. They will also be running a “make your own field guide” activity in which kids and their parents can go on a scavenger hunt on our campus’s nature trail for stamps to create their own field guides- all with an environmental theme.

Description: PDS teacher, Julie O’Sullivan, and her son who is a PDS student, will be doing a couple of demonstrations of drop spindle spinning. Try your hand at working with the spindles and fibre!

Name: Mid Hudson Children’s Museum Presents Rigamajig

Description: Rigamajig is an exhibit that is part of the Mid-Hudson Children Museum’s Link Lift Launch exhibition. The exhibit is a large scale building set with wooden planks, wheels, pulleys, nuts, bolts and rope that allows children to follow their curiosity through play. Children create contraptions to convey buckets, three legged spaceships, elephant movie projectors hiding under robot monsters, and all-purpose “Rigamajigs.” The act of playing and building is the goal, not the finished product.

Description:  When you need a mechanical part for a project, a 3D printer can probably make it. Chocolate molds, bicycle mirrors, camera lights, specialized wrenches, LED bars, clips and brackets and handles and blocks: if you can imagine a thing, now you can make one! Attendees watched a Makergear M2 produce interesting parts, saw what a 3D printer can do for you, and got a feel for the future of personal Making.

Description: Llama Karma joined our line-up of agricultural makers at the the fair. This family run farm brought goats, alpacas and llamas to the PDS campus for a hands on exhibit. Children of all ages enjoyed the interactive experience of getting up close and personal with theses animals.

: Needle felting is the art of sculpting wool with small, sharp barbed needles. The “stabbing” of the wool causes the fibers to shrink and therefore lends the wool to be sculpted into either a 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional sculpture.

Description: Creativity Works presents a hands-on STEAM workshop, entitled: “Superhero Creature Project”,  designed for grades K-2 that leads students through imagining what problems need to be fixed in the world.  The young makers then draw and create their superhero out of conductive clay and LEDS.  This workshop is a highly condensed sample of STEAM curriculum developed by Briana Dabroski and Emily Puthoff during a Summer 2014 Undergraduate Research Project entitled “Creatively Tinkering with STEAM curriculum”  at the State University of New York at New Paltz.  The workshop should take an hour to participate in.
